This learning module is designed for:
Interventional cardiologists
Structural Heart Cardiologists

Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (LAAO) is a procedure performed by interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons to reduce the risk of clot formation in the left atrial appendage. This training module will help users understand the fundamental steps and critical points for a successful LAA occlusion. This module assumes familiarity with the left atrial (LA) anatomy, and experience with transseptal puncture techniques.

Ultrasound imaging modalities, intra-cardiac echo (ICE) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), offer advanced visualization and measurements. The module provides the ability to test different device sizes in various LAA anatomies allowing physicians to develop and build their technical, procedural, and cognitive skills in a realistic and risk-free environment. Real devices and haptic feedback deliver a complete and immersive training solution.

Features & Benefits

Key Benefits

Features & Benefits

• Realistic LAA occluder behavior provides the ideal environment to test strategies on a variety of anatomies to understand how to choose the correct device size.

• Built in step-by-step expert guidance encourages self learning without the need for proctoring.

• Train as a team with an echocardiographer or individually using preset echo views for ICE and TEE.

• Built-in complications such as cardiac tamponade and aortic puncture show the importance of careful tool manipulation.

• Practice of careful and controlled device manipulation in the LA.

• Visual aids such as labeled anatomical structures shorten the learning curve.

• Detailed metrics and benchmarking tools allow users to track progress to help optimize training and identify areas that need improvement.

• Ability to run each case with or without assistance to help with retention and identify knowledge gaps

Training Objectives

• Become familiar with the procedure steps to ensure correct occluding device placement

• Choose correct device size based on anatomy and measurements

• Learn how to perform transseptal puncture

• Become familiar with ICE and TEE

• Identify and manage complications

• Gain experience with the transseptal assembly

• Manipulate devices and manage anatomical variations

• Recognize important anatomical landmarks

• Utilize needle pressure to confirm location

• Identify inadvertent aortic puncture or tamponade
