Metric-Based Virtual Reality Simulation - A Paradigm Shift in Training for Mechanical Thrombectomy in Acute Stroke

 

Ischemic stroke is the second leading cause of death and the predominant cause of long-term disability in the Western world.  Until recently, the standard treatment for ischemic stroke was intravenous administration of r-tPA. Over the past years studies have shown that r-tPA followed by mechanical thrombectomy is superior in large vessel occlusions to only administering r-tPA, given the mechanical thrombectomy is performed by an expert. The lack of experts compared to the potential patient volume means that many new operators need to be trained.

The Mentice Acute Ischemic Stroke Intervention training software offers hands-on training for mechanical thrombectomy. Trainees can improve their skills in challenging scenarios by training on difficult accesses and dealing with complications away from patients and without the stress of being in an acute procedure. Several different techniques are supported to achieve carotid access as well as removing the thrombus – all leading to acquire skills to perform a safe and efficient mechanical thrombectomy.
