Atrial Septal Defect and Patent Foramen Ovale Occlusion

Hands-on training for closure of structural heart defects

learn more
This learning module is designed for:
Interventional cardiologists

ASD and PFO occlusion is designed for electrophysiologists, interventional cardiologists, and cardiac surgeons who wish to improve their or their team’s understanding of the fundamental steps and critical learning points for Atrial Septal Defects and Patent Foramen Ovale occlusion. The module allows for safe and effective training of either individuals or multi-disciplinary teams.

This module assumes familiarity with echocardiography and expert knowledge of the atrial anatomy. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) or intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) with live Doppler visualization is available during the whole procedure. Mentice ASD/PFO occlusion allows for training on catheterization and examination of the left atrium, septum and defect pathology assessment, secure deployment of an appropriate occluder, and assessment of the device configuration after deployment. Training on various pathologies and adverse events is carried out in a safe environment, which prepares the operator for real procedures in the operating room.

Features & Benefits

Key Benefits

Learn about patient selection and pre-operative planning

Understand the fundamentals of ICE and TEE

Train occluding a variety of different ASDs and PFO pathologies

Prepares for challenging cases and teaches how to avoid complications

Features & Benefits

• Variety of ASD pathologies including multifenestrated ASD and minimal rims

• Selection of PFO pathologies including thick secundum and aneurysmatic septum

• Echocardiography (ICE and TEE) for all steps in the procedure

• Integrated Doppler flow visualization throughout the procedure

• Measurement capabilities, allowing assessment of the ASD or PFO using fluoroscopy as well as echocardiography

• Realistic device and anatomy appearance

• Drug administration

• Complication training

• Live metrics for instant feedback

Training Objectives

• Examine the ASD or PFO using ICE or TEE and understand the various views to assess the pathology in a correct way

• Properly catheterize the left atrium across the defect or PFO, using echo and fluoroscopy as guidance

• Assess of the ASD or PFO using a sizing balloon and stop flow technique for proper device selection

• Demonstrate proper device deployment using fluoroscopy, ICE and TEE

• Master device deployment in a variety of pathologies, e.g. avoid device prolapse in defects when the aortic rims are small

• Recognize the signs of successful occluder deployment
